Chapter 3: On Top of the Crown Towers

As Kris held on to the doctors arm, she saw many new things in Melbourne. The TV station, SBS’s building was much more impressive now than in 2007. Now, it looked like a gigantic 3D puzzle with a huge globe on top. There was, however, a new building that had gone up in Federation Square. It was called the “Asteroid and Meteor Detection and Defense” building. Apparently since 1912. Yeah right. Thought Kris. They couldn’t give a stuff about meteorites and asteroids in 2007, let alone 1912! What a stupid advertisement. Suddenly the numbers changed and pixilated to reform a new message.

“INTERNAL ERROR. PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL FULLY ON HOW TO USE THE DATE/TIME FEATURE, IMBOSILE! Kris looked at the message. So now, apparently computers have attitude programmed into them. I bet whoever did that got the sack. Kris couldn’t help thinking.

There was many more things that Melbourne had to offer now, that included electronic posters that acted like mega-flat-screen televisions.

‘Don’t look at those, they’ve got subliminal messages on them.’

‘But, I thought they banned the use of subliminal messages somewhere in the late twentieth-century.’ Said Kris. ‘How come they have them now?’

‘Well, you see, the government made a legislation.’

‘What kind of legislation?’ Kris asked.

‘Well, they called it the “Legislation for Unlimited and Unrestrained Advertising Providing Advertising is Paid for” legislation.’

‘Oh, how ridiculous.’ Said Kris bitterly as she kept walking through the crowds. ‘By the way, what’s your name, and if you’re not human, what the heck are you?’

‘My name is The Doctor, and my race was the Time Lords. By the way, how about your name?’

‘My name’s Kris. And how can your name be “The Doctor”? Surely you have a proper name?’

‘My name is The Doctor.’ The Doctor repeated. He said nothing more on the subject. Kris and The Doctor shoved their way through the crowds until they got to a bridge that crossed over the Yarra River, where there were less people. The pair moved to the Crown Towers, (actually, there’s really only one, but that’s what they call it) and there was upstairs, downstairs, and shops all over the place. The Doctor went to an elevator that had restricted access for certain people only.

‘I think we come through-’

‘Ouch!’ Kris had been jabbed in the arm by someone carrying (yes, I’m not having you on) an antique Aboriginal spear. And, just as the Aboriginals had made it, a sharp spear.

‘What happened?’ Asked the Doctor. ‘Are you alright Kris?’

‘Someone just jabbed me with an antique Aboriginal spear!!’ Said Kris angrily. ‘I didn’t even know they had those!!’

‘Yeah, they wanted to honor the Aboriginals and say sorry for all the abuse that was cast towards them during the invasion from the Europeans.’ Said The Doctor. ‘So what did the government do? They decided to find all those old Aboriginal weapons and turn them into antiques.’

‘Did the Aboriginals like it?’ Kris asked with curiosity.

‘Half and half.’ Said The Doctor. ‘Some thought it was an honor to have all their old things preserved as antiques, yet others thought it as an insult to have there items passed around. Really, it’s a matter of their own opinion. Anyway, I was saying that we can get through this door by using this little thing.’ (The Doctor pulled out of his pocket a little metal stick with a blue light on the end) ‘It’s called a sonic screwdriver!’

The Doctor pointed the sonic screwdriver at the electronic lock and the latch popped open like that. Kris followed the Doctor in.

‘OK, nothings in the way of the door.’ Kris reassured The Doctor. He nodded in reply and pointed the mysterious (how the heck can that be a screwdriver??) at the buttons and Kris felt the lift move upwards. They went up for ages…

‘How long does this take?’

‘Not much longer.’ Said the Doctor. ‘Not much longer at all…’

As if right on cue, a “DING!” was heard and the doors opened, revealing the new rooftop square at the top of the tower. Up here, there was the gigantic jeweled crown that was the logo for the complex and could be seen from wherever you could see the Crown Towers.

‘Well, here we are!’ Said The Doctor brightly trying to feel around for Kris, upon finding her arm grabbed hold. ‘The little tiny jewel on the top of the crown is what we need.’ The Doctor and Kris moved over towards the gigantic crown.

‘Here, I’m good at climbing trees.’ Said Kris. ‘I’ll do it.’

‘Are-’

‘I’m sure, there’s nothing to it.’ Interrupted Kris.

‘Alright then, if your sure, take the sonic screwdriver and for heavens sake don’t drop it!’ Said The Doctor.

‘Right.’ Said Kris, taking the screwdriver out of his hand and putting it between her teach, beginning to climb up the crown. It was just like climbing a climbing wall – as it had breaks and cracks that made perfect hand grip everywhere. Kris climbed upwards. It was so much harder than what she thought at first it would be, because the cracks dug into her hands.

Breathing deeply to get the air circulating, Kris reached the top of the crown and with one hand, pulled the sonic screwdriver from her teeth, almost inhaling it at the same time, and pressed the only button on it. Slowly the jewel came unstuck, and dropped to the roof, making a small “ching!” as it hit the ground. The Doctor went and picked it up as Kris began to descend downwards from the crown.

Suddenly, the alarm blared, and it was horribly noisy too.

‘Ah, this might be a problem Kris’ Said The Doctor calmly.

‘You don’t say!?’ Replied Kris sarcastically.
