Chapter 4: Security Guard Mayhem

Kris climbed back down to the ground with her hands and fingers horribly sore from the sharp ends, and gave the sonic screwdriver back to it’s rightful owner. She grabbed onto the Doctor’s arm and they rushed to the elevator, the gem safely in the Doctor’s zip pocket. The Doctor jammed the screwdriver into the electric lock and the elevator door opened, but then closed again immediately to go back down.

‘Someone wants it to fetch them first!’ Kris said nervously. ‘That’ll be security! We’re going to get caught!!’

‘We might be found,’ Said The Doctor. ‘But we’re not going to get caught.’

‘And how, do you suppose that works out?’ Kris said in an angry voice, yet really quite puzzled.

‘You’ll see.’ Said the Doctor. ‘You’ll see…’

‘What is that, your signature?’ Said Kris sarcastically. ‘How are we going to get passed them?’

‘Just follow me and do as I say.’ Said The Doctor. ‘Get out of the way from the lift and move to somewhere that the guard won’t stand. When he’s standing there wondering where the robbers are, creep up on him and grab his ankles, pulling them towards you. That can trip anyone over, especially if they don’t expect it. Then I’ll jump out from my hiding place and handle the rest, got it?’

‘Yeah, got it.’ Replied Kris, thankful that the Doctor was finally relieving some of his plan to her.

The little floor counter at the top of the lift was counting up. The rooftop was the 67th floor, and the elevator was up to 53. Kris hid at the side of the elevator box and The Doctor hid at the other side. With a “DING!” the elevator door’s opened, and an armed security guard came up, holding a strange-looking gun with lights flashing over it outwards towards the crown. Kris crept up on him and grabbed his ankles from behind, causing him to fall flat on his face. The Doctor then jumped out and yanked the gun and radio receiver out of his hand and put them down onto the concrete roof, and pressed the guard hard onto the roof so he couldn’t get up.

‘What do you think you’re doing!?’ Said the security guard angrily. ‘Get off me!’

‘I’m sorry, but we’ve got a problem, and it just so happens that it can be fixed with the ruby we took off the top of the crown. Please let us through, and we’ll let you get up.’ Said The Doctor.

‘No! The moment you let me up I’m calling for backup!’ Replied the security guard angrily.

The Doctor looked over to where he thought Kris was standing, which was a little too much to the left and shrugged. He didn’t have any more to his plan. There was one course of action, thinking on her feet.

‘Please Mr. security guard,’ Said Kris in a really longing voice. ‘You’ve gotta let us through, I need that gem for my… my health!’

‘I won’t let you through!’ Repeated the security guard stubbornly. ‘Where are you anyway, girl?!’

Kris ignored him and looked around, seeing the weird gun lying on the ground, on it, there was a switch that could be turned to kill, coma, unconscious, black out or restore. Kris ran over, picked it up and switched it to black out. Her hands still hurt, and in one small case bled from the climbing, so it was hard to pick up and keep hold of. Kris fired it at the security guard from behind.

‘Think that did it?’ Kris asked The Doctor. ‘I switched it to black out.’

‘Then let’s go, he’ll wake up soon. Kris, Keep that laser with you incase we run into anymore guards, OK?’

The Doctor didn’t wait for a reply, he jammed the sonic screwdriver into the electronic lock to open it, but just as he was doing so, another guard came up the lift and saw what The Doctor was doing, so he immediately swiped the screwdriver out of The Doctor’s grip and snapped it in half, making the blue light go out. Kris only remembered then that the guard could not see and she could knock him out without anyone knowing she was ever there. She aimed and pointed it at the security guard, but he must have seen the laser in midair, because just before she pulled the trigger with her sore hands he pointed at her in confusion.

The elevator door was still open, and inside was the sonic screwdriver’s remains. Kris and The Doctor dragged the (overly plump) security guard out of the lift, then went in. The Doctor picked up the two pieces of the sonic screwdriver and carefully held them together in the right position. It sparked a little, and then the blue light flickered feebly.

‘It’ll hold out for a few more uses!’ Said The Doctor, looking at it urgently as though he could repair it by just looking. ‘Kris, are you in the elevator?’

‘Yes.’ Replied Kris.

The Doctor held the two sonic screwdriver pieces together firmly and jammed it into the electronic floor selector and pressed G. The elevator went down for about one and a half minutes then popped open at the ground floor. Kris and The Doctor were already sprinting out when five security guards stood in their way. The Doctor crashed into one guard who knew he was coming, and was now held in three guards’ grip. Kris however, was completely unseen and when she hit the remaining two security guards she bowled them over like bowling pins. Kris barely heard The Doctor say ‘Strike!’ from behind her. Both security guards and Kris were now on the floor, but Kris pulled herself up quickly. One of the guards realized there was a laser floating in midair and lunged for it, snatching it out of Kris’s grip.

‘You lot, there’s someone there! There’s someone I can’t see! I just snatched this laser out of their hand, it looked as though it was suspended in midair! There’s someone there’

The security guards all looked around, trying to see if they could detect who or what it was. Kris was smart enough to hightail it out of the spot she had previously been standing and went over to The Doctor. She snatched one of the other security guard’s lasers despite the pain in her hand, switched it to black out and fired it at all five security guards, who all crumpled over the top of each other. The Doctor squirmed free of the pile-up and Kris went up to him.

‘You OK?’ Kris asked The Doctor. He nodded in reply.

‘C’mon, let’s get out of here Kris. Where’s your arm? Your hands must be sore.’

‘Here.’ Said Kris, placing her arm into The Doctor’s hand, as he grabbed it. He began to run, and so did Kris. They were about to get out when at the door, a concrete door covered it sealing them in. The Doctor put the two pieces of his sonic screwdriver at the electronic lock, but both the lock and the screwdriver sparked feebly and the blue light went out.

‘…and now we’re stuck…’ Said Kris, looking at the concrete wall hopelessly.
