Chapter 5: Liquid Ruby

Kris looked behind herself, there were several security guards running towards them. Kris didn’t know any way out, but The Doctor did. He ran towards the elevator with Kris in hot pursuit, pushing what remained of the security guards out of the way and they ran up the stairs. When The Doctor and Kris got up the stairs, they ran to the nearest window. The Doctor wrenched it open and stood on the ledge.

‘What the hell are you doing!? We’re an entire rather large story up!’ Said Kris in utter surprise.

‘Jumping!’ Said The Doctor with a mad grin on his face. And then he jumped. Kris looked out the window as he fell to the ground, landing on his side. For a second, he didn’t move. Quite suddenly, he just got up and brushed his coat off from all the dirt on the ground.

‘Kris, there’s a pipe on the side, you can slide down it!’

‘Ok then…’ Said Kris, not sure whether or not she should do it. But when she saw two security guards running to the window after seeing The Doctor jump, she quickly but carefully climbed out the ledge and grabbed onto the pipe. Kris slided down it as slowly as possible, and when she hit the ground, she ran to The Doctor and elbowed him.

‘C’mon, let’s get out of here before the guards figure out you jumped out the window and didn’t go splat.’

‘Right, good idea.’ Said The Doctor, grabbing Kris’s arm and beginning to run towards the Yarra bridge. They kept moving despite the stitch in Kris’s chest. Eventually, they stopped.

‘We’ve gone so far, I don’t think they’ll catch up to us.’ Said Kris, rubbing her forehead with her arm because she was sweating a little.

‘Kris, when you’re traveling with me, you assume nothing and expect everything. We’ve got to get to the Tardis!’

At that, they continued to run towards Federation Square. Kris’s stitch was getting worse, but she still kept running. God knows what would happen to her if they found an invisible person. They’d probably think she was some kind of ghost and have a go at doing scientific research on her. That was the fact that kept her running with The Doctor.

As they got to Federation Square, they still kept running. Kris just turned her head back to see if anyone was following her when she collided with a teenage girl who was merely shopping.

‘What the living heck was that!?’ She said in confusion, looking around to see if she could see the person who crashed into her. ‘Where are you? Don’t tell me you just ran off without saying sorry! YOU HEAR ME? COME BACK HERE!’

The Doctor came up and approached Kris who nearly accidentally said sorry. Despite the teen thinking he was blind, he reached around trying to find Kris with his hand. He then pulled Kris away towards the little tiny concealed section of Federation Square where the Tardis was parked, and unlocked the door with his key and then opened the door, swung Kris around and inside, then followed, closing and locking the door behind him.

‘Kris, even if you bump into someone, don’t say sorry or anything, just keep moving or you’ll give away your position.’

‘OK then.’ Said Kris. ‘It’s just sorta my first instinct to apologize.’

‘That’s good, but save it until people can see you again. Now, to make you visible again, we need to make liquid ruby out of this special gem. There’s not too many around, it’s a special ruby. It’s imbued with a substance known as ivosion. We can make liquid ruby only with a sonic screwdriver. We’re going to have to repair this one…’

The Doctor pulled out the two broken pieces of the sonic screwdriver. A few sparks connected the pieces occasionally, but it was otherwise lifeless.

‘Kris, would you hold this piece for me?’

‘OK.’ Said Kris, taking the once blue-lighted end and pointing the broken end towards The Doctor.

‘Good.’ Said The Doctor. ‘Keep holding it.’

The Doctor took his end and looked at all the bare wires that were weakly creating little sparks. The Doctor then clenched one of them between his teeth and pulled it out, creating a small flash of electricity. The Doctor then put this wire aside and took the other end from Kris, and put both ends in one of the many, many machines of the Tardis. This one had a pen-shaped slot, and it seemed that the two pieces melded themselves back together.

‘There, all fixed! Good as new!’ Said The Doctor happily, picking up the sonic screwdriver out of the machine.

‘Excuse me, but what about the other wire?’ Kris asked. ‘Don’t you need that?’

‘That?’ Said The Doctor. ‘I don’t need that, it’s just a wire that helps elongate the blue light at the end by a few hours. They last several hundred years each, so I don’t think we have to worry. It would have only gotten in the way during repair. Now, that ruby is in my pocket…’

Kris would have asked The Doctor his age because of the light, but felt it rude to ask. She figured that maybe she should ask later. The Doctor reached into one of his pockets and pulled out the brilliant, glittering ruby. Kris never had a good look before, but now she could see it, it was the sparkliest, clearest ruby with a vivid red.

‘It’s beautiful…’ Said Kris. ‘It’s a shame we have to melt it down… What’s making it sparkle like that?’

‘It’s the ivosion inside it that makes it sparkle. Anyway, let’s melt it down.’

The Doctor put the ruby into a small cup in the main machine and then pointed the sonic screwdriver at it, pressing the button. Kris watched as the blue light slowly began to melt the ruby down. When it was done, the ruby had changed into a liquid.

‘Drink it.’ Said The Doctor. ‘It’ll go through your skin and effect your clothes too.’

‘Kris took the little cup out of it’s socket and looked at it with uncertainty. It was ruby after all, and rubies where meant to be worn, not drunk.

‘Cheers…’ Said Kris weakly, draining the cup in one lot.

‘There we go, much better.’ Said The Doctor. ‘Now that that’s over, how about we get you home.’

‘What?’
